Tsumago is a well-preserved town in the Kiso Valley, Nagano Prefecture. It is located along the old Nakasendo highway, and while it was once a post town, it is now and important historical district. Post towns in the Edo Period (1600-1868) served as lodging and dining places for travelers along Japan's main highway.
Many of the buildings in Tsumago are quite old, and some built during the Edo Period. The town is protected by the national government because of its historical and cultural importance.
