Otaru is a beautiful port, facing the Ishikari Bay. For decades the town has been one of Hokkaido’s economical center. The port and particularly the herring fishing industry helped the town to gain its nickname “the Wall Street of Hokkaido”. Like many places in Hokkaido, Otaru’s architecture is a combination of Japanese and Western styles. Nowadays the town is a popular destination for tourist. The canal district is a peaceful place for a walk, with many shops. Most tourists buy glasses as souvenirs from Otaru, one of the town specialties.
