Fukuoka
Modern day Fukuoka city was founded on April 1, 1889 when the cities of Hakata and Fukuoka were merged. Hakata was the port and commercial center of the area while Fukuoka was where the samurai lived. There was much debate about what the new city should be named and the consensus was Hakata but a group of samurai crashed the meeting and demanded that the city be named Fukuoka. Today Hakata is the central ward and the name of the main train station.
